The House of Medici
The Medici family, or the House of Medici, was the most powerful family in Italy during the Renaissance and throughout that time period. Their reign began with the rise of Cosimo de' Medici and lasted for three centuries before ending in the 1700's when the last Medici ruler died without a heir. During their reign, four Popes were elected from their family and many of the Medicis were married into royalty causing Medici blood to now still be in some monarchies. The Medici's power and involvement in art and humanities helped to create and progress the Renaissance into what it became. The Medici's reign was a very significant factor to the growth of Italy and the Renaissance it undertook as well as the whole region's growth and rebirth.
