Leonardo's Personality
Leonardo's time period had a lot to do with his personality and attitude toward life. The Renaissance was a time of "rebirth" for Europe, where art and culture started to become a new, better way of life. Leonardo was born in the midst of the Renaissance and grew to become a leader of the movement. Taking part in the Renaissance helped him to develop into the genius he really was. He was able to explore and expand his knowledge and abilities during this time along with keeping up with his work. Although he was great at what he did, he did have his setbacks. Leonardo was an extreme perfectionist. This could have been a good thing, but it also had it's major disadvantages. He did not finish a lot of his paintings and projects because of this and often became frustrated with his work. Although this was a problem, Leonardo was still thought of as a true genius and was often called upon for work.
Many events in his life could have also affected his personality. When Leonardo was working as an apprentice for Verrocchio there was an incident where Leonardo actually "out painted" Verrocchio while they were working on a painting together. Leonardo's work had such better depth and attention to detail, that Verrocchio vowed never to "pick up the brush" again and he stayed true to his word. It was then that people started to realize his talent and genius. He himself also started to discover his own talent and he then realized that he yearned to grow his knowledge and explore new ideas. Leonardo also proved to be a futurist, along with his many other talents, and was way ahead of his time. For instance, anatomy was a subject he had become very interested in, although it was not a popular subject at all and was even often frowned upon. Despite this, Leonardo still studied it with interest, although he was probably thought poorly of and even thought crazy. Many of his inventive ideas could have also had this reaction. People often thought he was crazy for inventing such bizarre unheard of machines because there was really nothing like these machines back then and not really any use for them either. You can assume that Leonardo was probably introverted just by the way he acted and how he worked so intently by himself all the time. There was a soft spot about Leonardo though. He believed in peace and hated war and the death that came with it. While working as an military engineer he designed and made blueprints of the first submarine, but he actually never presented them and is said to have even have ripped them up because he hated the mass destruction it could cause. This probably happened with many other military weapons he designed although some of them we use today, like the tank or the machine gun. Leonardo da Vinci may have had his flaws and his set backs and may not have always been popular in society, but in the end he proved to be a true genius and has contributed a lot to the way we live today.
