1503 - "Mona Lisa"
In 1503 Leonardo was commissioned to paint probably the most well known painting in the world, the "Mona Lisa". By whom it was commissioned is not known for sure because the subject is not known either, although there are many theories. The most popular idea is that the lady in the painting is Lisa Gherardini and the painting was commissioned to celebrate her new son. Despite this mystery, this painting is a renowned masterpiece because of it's elaborate technique. Leonardo never sold this painting and kept it with him wherever he traveled. Today it's on display at the Louvre in Paris, France and is the most visited painting in the world.
