April 15 - Leonardo da Vinci was Born
On April 15, 1452, Leonardo da Vinci was born in the small town of Vinci, Italy, near the city of Florence. He was born to Messer Peiro Fruosino di Antonio da Vinci, a wealthy notary (lawyer) and Caterina, a peasant woman. His full birth name was Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci, which means "Leonardo, son of Messer Piero, of Vinci. His parents were not married, so Leonardo was considered an illegitimate child. Soon after, his father went and married into a different, wealthier family and Leonardo went to live with his grandparents. His birth was near the beginning of a time period called the Renaissance, which was a time of "rebirth" for Europe where art and culture were starting to become a new way of life. Leonardo would later become a great leader in the Renaissance.
